About AARES
The Australian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society aims to encourage study, research, discussion and extension in the discipline of agricultural and resource economics in order to promote the efficient development of agricultural and natural resources. AARES has a federal structure with branches in major States, New Zealand and North America.

Invitation to attend
The members of the Australian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society extend a warm invitation to you to attend the Annual Conference in 2009. The Committee and contributors are developing a dynamic and diverse program incorporating a range of industry professionals and specialist speakers and presenters. The Conference venue is the Cairns International Hotel, Northern Queensland, Australia.

The Conference presents a great opportunity for all those involved in research, extension, teaching, policy making and managing agriculture and natural resources to catch up with and contribute to the latest research into those issues and to hear broader perspectives about where the issues fit in the Australian, New Zealand and world economies from some of the world’s leading agriculture and resource economists.

Conference Themes and Keynote Speakers
The key theme of the Conference is ‘Tracking North: New Challenges in Environmental and Resource Issues’. Particular attention is being focused on emerging challenges in climate change and emissions trading, future industries and development; environmental and NRM policy; marine and fishing ; and agricultural biotechnology.
 
The Conference organising committee are working hard to develop the program. The keynote speakers that have been identified include Professor Ross Garnaut (ANU), Dr Jane Melanie (ABARE), Professor Peter Rogers (University of NSW), Professor David Pannell (U. of Western Australia), Professor John Quiggin (U. of Queensland), Professor Terry Hughes (U. of Queensland), Professor Hugh Possingham (U. of Queensland), Dr Paul McLeod (U. of Western Australia), Mr Kevin Goss (CRC for Future Farming Industries), Professor Nicholas Kalaitzandonakes (U. of Missouri-Columbia), Professor Phil Pardey (U. of Minnesota).
 
The planned plenary sessions include:
 
Issues for Australia’s Resource Sectors:  
·          The National Emissions Trading Scheme
·          Energy and Agriculture: State of Knowledge of Current and Emerging Biofuel Systems
·          Climate change: Can the Great Barrier Reef be saved?
 
Environmental and NRM Policy:  
·          Australian NRM Policy: the past, the present and lessons learned
·           Investing in Agriculture to make a difference: theory and practice, principles and priorities
 
Future Industries and Development
·          The energetic north: development gains and growing pains,
·          Future Farm Industries for Australia
·          Agricultural Biotechnology Developments and their economic impacts
 
Marine and Fishing resources:  
·          Marine Reserve Selection: interfacing science and economics
·          Recreation fishing policy in Australia: a case of government failure?
 
In addition, arrangements are being made for pre-conference workshops including:
·          The Environmental Economics Research Network research forum
