Pre-Congress Courses

The major themes for the Congress will be introduced with the pre-congress Masterclass and Charrette Course, using actual case studies. These will flow through the entire Congress program. Designers and planners will put forward principles and proposals for more compact forms of development and these will be examined, discussed, debated and tested from an environmental and social perspective. Debate will be lively and you will leave with an enriched understanding.

Masterclass

Sunday April 25 - Tuesday April 27
Masterclass Only - $1,240.00
Combined Congress Registration & Masterclass - $1,850.00 - SAVE $285.00
ACNU 2010 will include the option of an additional intensive three day Masterclass led and reviewed by internationally acclaimed urban designers and design facilitators, including Paul Murrain and supported by a number of tutors drawn from Australia. The Masterclass will focus on the design issues of two key development sites and opportunities in Adelaide – one an inner city infill project and the other being a suburban location adjacent to a Regional Centre. The masterclass will explore how the two sites can be transformed into great destinations using New Urbanism principles. Join with and benefit from working side by side with leading international and national urban designers in the intensive design-based training program.

Sunday April 25 - Tuesday April 27
NCI Course Only - $1,240.00
Combined Congress Registration & NCI Course - $1,850.00 - SAVE $285.00
As a prelude to the National Congress, the ACNU has engaged the USA-based National Charrette Institute to facilitate an NCI Charrette Planner Certificate course in Adelaide. This course is invaluable both for those who hire others to conduct Charrettes and for those who wish to conduct and manage Charrettes themselves. By the end of the three day program you will have practiced the complete process for planning a Charrette. This is only the second time that this course has been offered in Australia and participants receive a Certificate in Charrette Planning.

David K. Brain

Professor of Sociology
M.A., Ph.D., Harvard University
B.A., University of California at Berkeley

Professor Brain's research and teaching interests focus on the connections between place-making, community-building, and civic engagement, and on sociological issues related to the planning and design of good neighborhoods, humane cities, and sustainable development at the regional scale.

In addition to research and theoretical writing on these topics, his work has led to practical involvements that include both independent consulting and neighborhood-oriented action research that engages students in collaboration with local community groups.  Locally, he and his students have worked with city and county government as well as neighborhood and community groups. He has been recognized internationally as an expert on contemporary efforts to transform the way cities are built, and as a frequent contributor to educational programs for citizens and professional practitioners--- in collaboration with the Florida House Institute for Sustainable Development, the Seaside Institute, the Seaside Pienza Institute for Town Building and Land Stewardship, the Knight Program in Community Building, and the Catanese Center for Urban and Environmental Solutions.  He is also a partner in High Cove, a village in the mountains of western North Carolina designed as an experiment in ecologically responsible development practices.  His published research has included work in the sociology of work, professions, and work organizations; social theory; and the sociology of culture.

Professor Brain teaches courses in urban sociology; the sociology of space and place in contemporary cities and suburbs; sustainable communities; social theory; sociology of culture (including the arts, popular culture, material culture, science and technology); and social organization.
