Invitation

The 23rd Association of Industrial Relations Academics of Australian and New Zealand (AIRAANZ) Conference is to be held from 4-6 February 2009 in Newcastle, Australia.

The conference theme of Labour, Capital and Change invites, in the tradition of earlier AIRAANZ conferences, a wide range of papers which explore contemporary industrial relations theory and practice.

Under pressures such as the apparent competitive determinism of globalisation, the assertion of managerial power, the rise of individualism, governments' pursuit of neo-liberal policies, a popular mass media which trivialises or de-legitimises organised labour, it's often contended that the traditional vital signs of industrial relations, particularly as measured by the levels of union density and collective bargaining have declined in most OECD countries. Despite these changes, how the rules over work are made, interpreted and enforced still sit at the kernel of most people's lives.

Dr John Lewer
Conference Convenor

on behalf of the Newcastle Conference Organising Committee.
